Electric Superintendent

JOB FAMILY: Public Works and Utilities
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the city's electrical distribution under the direction of the Public Works and Utilities Director.
SUPERVISES: The Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for the nature and propriety of the final results

• To support the vision, mission and guiding principles of the city.

• While performing any procedure, all personnel must observe applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental rules and guidelines.

• Attend and participate in training opportunities and seminars relevant to this position.

• Adhere to appropriate city operating procedures, benefit rules, employment, and safety policies/practices.

• Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, city codes, the Southern Building Code, and Electric Cities safety regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

• The work consists of varied technical and supervisory duties.


• Coordinates, supervises and assists with activities involved in the maintenance and repair of city electrical distribution lines and components; ensures that assigned personnel adhere to safety and other codes and regulations.

• Oversees the overall construction, maintenance, inspection, alteration and repair of electrical lines and equipment, including determining the type of construction, hardware and equipment to be used for each job.

• Supervises the operation of the electrical load management system.

• Removes tree limbs from utility system rights-of-way.

• Responds to emergency calls as needed.

• Attends training as necessary.


• Any other duties as assigned.


The purpose of this position is to plan, supervise and assist with the provision of citywide electrical services. Successful performance helps ensure the safe, efficient and reliable provision of electrical services to consumers.

Job has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely impact performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified. Content of work priorities are determined by supervision.
The purpose of this position is to provide technical support to the utility department. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective operations of the utility department.


• Contacts are typically with developers, builders, other city employees, co-workers, and the general public.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, motivate personnel, and negotiate or settle matters.

Education and Experience

• Associates Degree. Five to seven years of related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Must comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Part 382 Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy.

• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

• Ability to become ITS (Integrated Transmission System) certified

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the methods and practices involved in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electric utilities.

• Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and other codes related to the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical utility line systems.

• Knowledge of the operation of electrical substations.

• Ability to interpret survey plats and engineering design plans on utility line construction projects.

• Ability to effectively coordinate, train and supervise subordinate personnel.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinate employees, other City staff and the general public.

• Skill in operating heavy equipment, bucket trucks, line trucks, and other equipment used in the maintenance and repair of electrical lines.

• Skill in the use of a power saw and other tools and equipment used to trim trees.

• Skill in troubleshooting electrical problems.

• Skill in the use of a computer and various electrical meters.

• Skill in oral and written communication.
