Meter Reader
POSITION TITLE: METER READER
EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-Exempt

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing assistance to customers in the field, reading and re-reading water and electric meters, and disconnecting and connecting utility services.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• To support the vision, mission and guiding principles of the city.

• While performing any procedure, all personnel must observe applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental rules and guidelines.

• Attend and participate in training opportunities and seminars relevant to this position.

• Adhere to appropriate city operating procedures, benefit rules, employment, and safety policies/practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Processes daily work orders for service connections, disconnections, and final readings.
• Advises customers of the policies, rules, regulations, and operating procedures of the department.
• Assists with loading and downloading computerized meter reading devices to the computer.
• Reads electric and water utility meters for commercial and residential customers.
• Responds to emergency calls as needed.
• Assists other utility crews with duties as needed and with the approval of the department head.
• Monitors vehicle maintenance with approval of the department head.
• Tests meters for proper calibration.

JOB SCOPE

Job has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely impact performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified. Content of work priorities are determined by supervision.

The purpose of this position is to provide information and services to customers in the field and read utility meters. Successful performance helps ensure continued water and electric services and the timely resolution of account problems for customers.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

COMPETENCIES/SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING PREFERRED:

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or GED and one to two years experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of water and electric meter functions and billing methods.

• Knowledge of electrical safety regulations.

• Knowledge of the city electrical and water systems.

• Knowledge of the location of city streets and meters.

• Skill in operating a hand-held meter-reading unit.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

• Skill in dealing with the general public.
