Overview of Cape Environmental Management, Inc., by Les Flynn, CFO

Cape’s ability to self-perform high-quality projects on time, on budget, and with safety, has made the company a valued partner of Fortune 500 companies, utilities, small and mid-sized industrial firms, architect/engineering firms, and governmental agencies, such as the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and the U.S. General Services Administration.

Cape delivers customized environmental, fuel-systems, and construction solutions, working closely with clients to customize the people, processes, and approaches needed to meet project requirements. This responsiveness and flexibility have taken the company throughout the U.S. and around the globe, including locations such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Colombia. To support its worldwide reach, CAPE chose Norcross for the new location of its corporate headquarters. The company moved its corporate headquarters to Norcross in early 2011, purchasing a 43,000-sq. ft. building in Pinnacle Center. "Norcross is central to the homes of most CAPE staff, has convenient interstate access, and great community features, such as the downtown area," says Les Flynn, CFO.

Providing a "Home Base" and "Connecting with Employees"

CAPE built out the space to provide comfortable, energy-efficient space, including a fitness center, to support one of the company’s core values of providing for staff’s health and well-being. The building also has a large training room and multiple conference rooms to accommodate employees from other offices for annual strategic planning, quarterly management summits, monthly company meetings, and training sessions. "With our employees spread out among many states, and even a few countries, and with the growth CAPE has experienced, it can be a challenge to maintain a company culture. It was very important for us to provide a home base that brings people together," explains Flynn.

This effort to connect with employees also extends to monthly, companywide teleconferences, during which CEO Fernando Rios and other executives share profitability, sales, safety, and other news with all staff. During the monthly call, Rios also announces the employees receiving a longevity bonus, awarded to personnel who have been with the company for 5 or more years. This includes people who have been with CAPE for their entire professional career. "We believe that each employee’s growth and success contribute directly to CAPE’s growth and success," says Rios. "We strive to make every team member’s experience at CAPE a challenging, enjoyable, and rewarding one."

The awards it has received and an average growth of 21% since its inception in 1985 and are testament to CAPE’s success. The company has received multiple awards and commendations from Department of Defense clients, as well as achievement awards from the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Environmental Business Journal. A minority-owned firm, CAPE started as a local asbestos and lead-based paint consulting firm. Today, the company’s services include a full range of environmental services, as well as the inspection, construction, and repairs of fueling facilities, buildings, and utilities.
