The Uniform Patrol Division is divided into 3 shifts that answer calls for service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The patrol division is the backbone to every police department. They answer the calls for service that come into the police department. Each shift has a shift commander that is reponsible for overall operation of the shift. They enforce state and laws and city ordinances within the city limits of Norcross.
The patrol division operates the Ford Crown Victoria and the Chevrolet Impala as its primary vehicles but also utilizes the Dodge Intrepid. As you may have noticed, we have changed our paint scheme on our vehicles. Our patrol cars have changed from white to gray with black lettering.
Day Watch Commander is Lt. J. Hood, Evening Watch Commander is Lt. R. D. Morphis and Morning Watch Commander is Lt. S. Kellogg.
TRAFFIC UNIT
The Traffic Unit is under the direction of Lt. Jeff Thornton. The Unit uses state-of-the art equipment to moinotor speeding in neghborhoods, incuding the Stealth Stat device. This speed-measuring device, which is a small box typically attached to autility pole or tree, minotors traffic volumes as well as high, average and low speeds of motorists. The Stealth Stat collects, sorts and analyzes data using a radar unit and computer. The findings are then posted on the City of Norcross's Web Site (Traffic Surveys), allowing residents to see the results. The results are also used to help theTEU determine which city streets require more monitoring and responsive efforts. The vehicle data is analyzed and the appropriate action is implemented. If traffic violations are present, the Traffic Enforcement Unit will create a traffic plan specifically designed to reduce those violations. The traffic plan may include additional speed surveys, neighborhood flyers, speed trailers and the designated patrol. The Traffic Enforcement Unit is tasked with monitoring and maintaining safe traffic flows throughtout the City of of Norcross. We have a specific number of officers available and therefore every street with violations may not receive designated patrol. Other methods may be very effective to resolve the traffic problem.
If you see a traffic violation, please call our dispatch at 770-448-2111. We will respond as quickly as we can to the complaint.
